Our text tells us that as many as are led by the Spirit of God are the sons of God. We can paraphrase it and say that as many as follow God’s Spirit, are the sons of God. What a revelation of your identity as a son of God. Sons of God, follow God’s Spirit. Sons of God are led by their Father. This shows the depth of intimacy and relationship that God expects between Him and His children. So as a new creation in Christ Jesus, when we talk about following God’s Spirit, we are really talking about walking with God your Father. If Enoch could walk with God and literally walk into eternity, then at least, we too can walk with God.

It is so important to understand all about following God’s Spirit because the quality of your life is a direct function of whom you are following or who is leading you. A man of God once said to a younger aspiring minister, “Your spiritual father is not the person who gives you counsel; he is the person whose counsel you take!” That is so simple, but so profound. The quality of your life today, the quality of your life tomorrow, is a direct function of who is leading you, whom you are following, and how well you are following your leader.

Therefore the first thing you need to know about following God’s Spirit is that following God’s Spirit should be a lifestyle not an event. They that are led by the Spirit of God are the sons of God. Therefore, the foundation of that lifestyle is relationship. Who is God to you? He is your Father. Being a father or a son are not things that are turned on and off like a switch. Following God’s Spirit should be a lifestyle founded on the truth that you have a relationship with God: He is your Father and you are His child. God wants to establish His fatherhood over you not just from what you can get from Him or what you can receive from Him but by your ability to follow Him.
