22 Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars’ hill, and said, Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious.
Acts 17:22 (KJV)
22 So Paul, standing in the center of the Areopagus [Mars Hill meeting place], said: Men of Athens, I perceive in every way [on every hand and with every turn I make] that you are most religious or very reverent to demons.
Acts 17:22 (AMP)
As much as following God’s Spirit is supernatural and not intellectual, supernatural does not mean superstitious. Superstition is when you are always looking for something to confirm some- thing else. You may not always have something that explains why God said something to you. Following God’s Spirit is supernatural but it is not superstitious. God can ask you to do some- thing and you can open your eyes wide and look for a confirmation, or seek for a reason later, on why God had asked you to do it, but you may never find one. Some of us, especially Africans, because of our superstitious and fetish heritage, introduce superstition into our walk with God.
Sometimes, I find it very amusing when people who think they are led by the Spirit of God and feel so very spiritual, always, want to see something in order to explain everything that happens. Many times superstition gets you into romancing with demon spirits or familiar spirits camouflaging as the Spirit of God and you never realize it because you are searching for a confirmation. Your primary confirmation for any “leading” from God should be from His Word and there should be righteousness, peace and joy in your heart about it (Romans 14:17).
Supernatural does not mean spectacular. How I wish many of our brothers and sisters in Christ will catch this as a revelation. Sunday mornings in too many of our churches, have turned to auditions for Hollywood or Nollywood! It is possible to follow God’s Spirit without necessarily having a physical spectacular display of anything. Some people are always looking for “an angel” to appear, before they agree to take any major decision. Others pray , “Lord, let there be a bright light or let me feel a strong wind as I pray.” Friend, those are unnecessary, dangerous prayers. You are a son of God and your sonship is supernatural, so following God’s Spirit is supernatural.
Confession:
Following God is supernatural. It is not superstitious nor always spectacular. I am a child of God and I am led by the Spirit of God.
