16 And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, “Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat;
17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”
Genesis 2:16-17
12 Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned.
Romans 5:12
“For in the day that you eat of it you will die.” That would have been bad enough! He said, “…For in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.” There was no doubt as to the consequence of disobeying God’s command. The expression, you shall surely die, means, “You will die suddenly; you will die immediately; you will definitely die.” That’s what happened to Adam and Eve. The instant they broke God’s command, they died spiritually.
As a result of Adam and Eve dying spiritually, they could no longer have relationship with God. That is one of the greatest tragedies resulting from the sin of Adam and Eve. As a result of dying spiritually, their bodies began to die or became subject to physical death. Adam was the one who messed up the first creation. The story of man’s fall would have been terrible and horrible if we were telling it as a history lesson, but it’s not history – it really happened. The worst part of it all is that it didn’t end there. The story didn’t end with Adam. The verse says through one man sin entered into the world. Adam is that one man.
Adam released an epidemic into the world that makes HIV or any other epidemic you know of, look like child’s play. From the day Adam died, death spread to all men. All men received that epidemic of sin and death. There is no vaccination or immunization or prevention for this epidemic. Everyone was born with the disease.
The new creation in Christ Jesus, is the only way to come out from under the law of sin and death, to the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus.
Confession:
Praise God, the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.
