10 By that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
Hebrews 10:10
The New Covenant in Christ Jesus is a better covenant than that of bulls and goats in the Old Testament. It is better because it is an everlasting “once and for all” covenant. Under the Old Covenant, bulls and goats had to be sacrificed regularly; but Christ offered His body once for all, thus giving us a perpetual guarantee.
In order to understand what is meant by a perpetual guarantee, you first have to understand who a guarantor is. If you go for a job, and you are asked to bring a letter or two from your guarantor, what does your prospective employer really want the letter or letters for? In effect your prospective employer is saying, “If there is a problem with you in this work place and you disappear, I want somebody that I can hold on to.” Similarly, if you want to open an account in a bank you are told to come with your guarantor. The bank is saying that if your account goes back in the red, it wants somebody to stand in your defence. You cannot talk of cutting a covenant without talking of blood. When Jesus offered His blood, we entered a covenant with God, and His blood stands for us in our defence.
When poverty or sickness tries to come against you, you have got a covenant of wealth and health that is standing for you because the sacrifice was made once and for all. The thing with a human guarantor is this: if some woman is my guarantor and she travels, we disagree or she gets locked up in a prison, what good is she to the company as my guarantor? There was a guarantor, but it was not eternal, it was subject to change, to disagreements, and to conditions. The good thing about our guarantor is that He is alive forever more, and the sacrifice was made, and it was made intact. You don’t just have a guarantor, you have an eternal One! He is never going to change His mind about guaranteeing you. His covenant is never going to turn back on you. His covenant of healing and health stands as a witness and a guarantee for you. If any kind of sickness tries to plague your body, your guarantor says, “I’m standing in the defence of this person.” Awesome!
Confession:
Jesus is my perpetual guarantee. His blood eternally stands in my defence.
