Meditate on the Word Day and Night

1 Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the path of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful;
2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and in His law he meditates day and night.

Psalm 1:1-2

8 This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.

Joshua 1:8

The word “meditate” is from the Hebrew word which means to murmur, ponder, speak, imagine, mutter, utter and moan. An expression that describes scriptural meditation is “pondering aloud to oneself by talking to oneself.” The Dictionary defines meditate to mean to consider thoughtfully, to revolve in the mind, serious, continuous contemplation on a religious or spiritual theme.

Meditation is one of the greatest tools towards the victorious life that God has given His children, but a lot of us do not utilize this tool. There are other counterfeit forms of meditation such as yoga, cultic meditation, which are outside the scope of God’s Word. True meditation for the believer is scriptural or biblical meditation.

The first thing to note is that the subject of scriptural meditation is the Word of God. Therefore we are safe to say that scriptural meditation is inspired by God. Meditation should really be done out of pleasure or love for the Word of God. Next, meditation starts in your mind, engages your spirit, and involves your mouth. Thirdly, meditation should be a habit. My prayer is that you will make a practice of meditating upon God’s Word.

Our text says meditation ought to be done day and night. There is no hour in the 24 hours of the day that doesn’t fall into day or night. The 24 hours of the day can be split into day or night. That shows that as a Christian, meditation is something that you need to do all the time. When you can cultivate this habit of meditation, you will tap into the power that exists in it.

As I make a habit of meditating on God’s Word day and night, I tap into the power that exists in it.
