LOVE: YOUR IDENTITY

12 No one has seen God at any time. If we love one another, God abides in us, and His love has been perfected in us.

1 John 4:12

Love is who you are positionally in Christ. With Christ’s death and resurrection, agape love, formerly unknown to man, came into existence. Another thing that came into existence with Christ’s resurrection is the new creation: the born again believer (2 Corinthians 5:17). Nobody could be truly born again until Jesus died and rose again. This tells me that the new creation is the agape creation. If you are born again, a new creation, then you were conceived in a pool of divine love. Surrounding your conception was agape love: the force behind your spiritual conception was the indescribable, formerly unknown love of God.

This love laid down its life for somebody who was not worthy. This love died for worthless sinners. This love reached out to love the unlovable. Another kind of love, phileo, loves the lovable. It is called friendship love because there has to be something you see in a friend that attracted you to him or her. Phileo is selfish: that is its limitation; it has to see something it likes, that is why everybody cannot be your friend. You can express agape love to everybody. It is the highest form of love and you were conceived in it. God did not stop there; He went on to fill you with that love. The Bible says that the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit, who was given to us (Romans 5:5). You were conceived in love; you were filled up with love. You are love; that is who you are.

If a child is born of Ibo parents, but grew up in Ibadan (Yoruba land), speaks Yoruba, cooks all the Yoruba delicacies well and has neither been to Ibo land nor knows how to speak Ibo, it does not change the fact that the child is Ibo. Postionally, the child’s identity is Ibo even though experientially he has been Yoruba all his life. In the same way, if you are a new creation, love is your identity. This love is spoken about in 1 Corinthians 13. Since you are love, it means you have those unique traits listed there (1 Corinthians 13:4-8). If you are not seeing the characteristics of love being manifested in your life, it doesn’t mean you are not a love creation. The first step to see love manifested in your life is to understand that love is who you are. Love is your identity.

Confession:

I am a new creation: a love creation. Love is my identity. I was conceived in love; I am filled up with love. I am love. I walk in love.
