Three years ago I got the gift of a Nokia Express Music phone from a former assistant who thought I had past using a Nokia 1100. I was delighted and found it exciting to use since it was a touch screen phone. It felt like moving from manual to automatic driving. Before then I was of the opinion that all I needed a mobile phone for is to make and receive calls, as well as reading my text messages, period! The phone started acting up until sometime in April this year, when the contacts in its memory vanished! I couldn’t imagine going back to pressing buttons, so I took it for repairs and was informed that the memory was corrupted. Right there I decided to find out how much a new one would cost. I was told it would cost me Forty Five Thousand Naira. Interesting! “Why must I spend that much for a mere mobile phone? “I thought to myself. I tried getting something cheaper and when I proceeded to pay with my Bank card at the POS machine I was warned that there may be no network coverage. I left and jokingly asked God to send me a phone through someone.
The next day at work, the head of my department called four of us into the office and gave us each a Black Berry Curve 2. “See me, see BB,” like Nigerians would say. I was not “tech savvy,” so I felt things like iPads and iPhones were too much for me — but not so in God’s eyes. I further stretched my faith by asking the company for airtime allowance which was approved that same day. I became the only one amongst them whose phone bills were paid for by the company.
I sincerely thank God for His favours even in mundane things.
