I had to take my baby for a nutrition class at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital because my baby was losing weight. I got there rather late and had to wait for a long time; but I was prepared to wait. After a while, the doctor informed us that he had to go for a meeting, so we all had to leave. I walked away, rather unhappy after having spent so much time.
As soon as we got to the road, unknown to me, a jeep was coming towards us in the reverse but because it was behind me, I did not see it. I only noticed people shouting. Later, I was told that it was in an attempt to get the driver’s attention, but she was not paying attention. When she realized it, instead of applying her breaks, in that confusion, she accelerated and my baby and I were knocked down.
My baby fell off my hand and landed on the tarred road under the jeep, while I fell face down just by the vehicle and the tyre went over my leg. Some nurses, who were right behind us, rushed us back to the hospital. One of them took my baby to the children’s emergency ward, while I was taken to the adult emergency ward. The doctors were amazed that I had neither fracture, nor any broken bones and my baby did not sustain any injuries. God in His mercy saved us. I told the doctors, “This is my God at work!”
The event made me remember the meaning of my baby’s name: Onoserahu, which means, “The one God has empowered.” When I got home, I tried to reconsider what had happened, and God referred me to Isaiah 25:8 which says that He has swallowed up death in victory and wiped away tears from our faces. God indeed wiped away tears from the face of my husband, and other members of my family. May God alone be praised!
