2 But Abram said, “Lord GOD, what will You give me, seeing I go childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?”
3 Then Abram said, “Look, You have given me no offspring; indeed one born in my house is my heir!”
4 And behold, the word of the LORD came to him, saying, “This one shall not be your heir, but one who will come from your own body shall be your heir.”

Genesis 15:2-4

Eliezer worked with Abraham for so long, and Abraham considered making him his heir. However, God’s position was that there had to be an Isaac, who would be the heir and through whom the nations God had promised Abraham would come (Genesis 15:1-4). When a good man has a committed, long serving and faithful servant or slave, it is very likely, that in his will, he would make provisions for them. He would likely give them a very good pay off or benefit to make sure they never have to hunger again. However, it’s not likely, in normal situations, that such a servant who may have served for even as long as forty years would be an heir. Rather, it would be the good man’s five year old son, who has lived with his father for only five years and has therefore consciously known him for probably only two or three years that will be the heir. His sonship qualified him above the servant. That is the awesome implication for being qualified to be heirs of God.

We qualified as heirs of God not by anything we did, but simply by the grace of God. We are heirs according to the promise (Galatians 3:29). Abraham received the promise by faith. He didn’t receive the promise because of anything he had done. You are a son of God simply by the grace of God. You are a son of God by the divine provision and initiative of a loving God. Know today that God is your Father and that you are His heir.
