Grateful to God Who Kept Me Safe

On the 11th of April 2014 while going to the State Secretariat building through Abacha Road, I encountered a robbery attack. I was trying to answer a call when I saw a police van and I felt there was trouble somewhere but going through the traffic jam, I quickly forgot about that.

When I got to Olu Obasanjo Road, I met another traffic jam and driving closer I saw a police van hesitantly moving towards the roundabout, so I overtook them. A few seconds after doing that, I heard a gunshot, and then another till it became rapid and closer and people were running everywhere. Knowing that the police van behind me was loaded with police officers and this was happening in front of a major police station, I turned to see what they were doing. Amazed, I saw them running from the van and taking off their shirts, not trying to take cover to handle the situation. They were running away!

I got out of my car and crawled to the ground to avoid being hit by stray bullets. Then I heard a heavy foot sound and a vicious kick to my back with a command to give them my key. I gave them without looking up as I knew he had a gun pointed to my head. He withdrew and entered my car sending a round of shots into the police yard. Others joined him and they drove off in my car. I got up unhurt and went straight to register my complaint in the police station that was in disarray. No one could attend to me because they were either screaming or shouting in a bid to save someone who had been shot and to find the owners of the cars that had been damaged.

I finally met the DPO who was panicking and injured. I told her the car belonged to me and gave her the description and plate number. She sent a message to her commanders and they began to chase them. I informed my wife of the incident using the DPO's phone as I sat waiting in his office because my phone and other items including my money were gone with the car. About two hours later, I heard that the car had been recovered. I asked my wife to go and confirm it and she called about thirty minutes later that she had seen it.

At that point I began to imagine the condition of the car because the DPO had said that they shot one of the robbers and that the car had his blood splashed on it. I was expecting a bullet-ridden car. After the necessary interrogation and investigations, I went to the station from where the men who confronted the robbers came. We met and my wife who was already there had been interrogated on her claim of ownership. When I met him, he just gave me the documents that werein the car and commanded his men to release the car to me.

I was surprised to see my car intact safe apart from the back windshield that was shattered. No bullet hit any other part and the body was just as clean as I had driven it out. I am grateful to God who kept me safe and unharmed and to the police too. He did not let the robbers shoot at me and even when the bullets were flying everywhere, He kept me from them. Praise God!
