Equal With God

18 Therefore the Jews sought all the more to kill Him, because He not only broke the Sabbath, but also said that God was His Father, making Himself equal with God.

John 5:18

While He walked on this earth, Jesus, our example, was conscious and confident of His sonship. In the verse above, the Jews were angry with Him because He called God His Father. Why? The Jews understood that if somebody is your father, you are of the same nature, the same stuff, the same DNA, the same substance as that person. Jesus didn’t actually stand up and say, “I’m equal with God.” He just called God His Father. What a thrill and a privilege to call God my Father. To call the Creator of the universe, the Almighty God, the I AM that I AM, the Covenant keeper, the One who sits on the circles of the earth – to call HIM my own Father. To intimately relate with Him as a little child, or as a growing teen would relate with their father. The revelation that I am of His stuff and His substance is an utmost thrill for me.

You may be wondering how it can be said that you’re of the same stuff with the Lord. To some religious readers, it may even sound like blasphemy! However, it is the truth of God’s Word. Equality or being one with God is simply a means for you to be an extension of the life and works of God here on earth. In John 5, Jesus asked the Jews if they were angry at Him because of the works He did. He then went on to say that the Father was at work through Him (John 5:17). That’s the whole idea of being one with God and having the same substance as He has. As a son of God, while you’re here on earth, you are meant to exhibit the life of God through His Son Jesus Christ. You are to carry out His purpose and passion here on earth.

Confession:
I am equal with God because God is my Father. I am an extension of the life and works of God here on earth because the Father is at work through me.
