6 But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.
7 For let not that man think that he shall receive anything from the Lord.

James 1:6-7 (KJV)

The Scripture above does not say that you should just ask, nothing wavering. Rather, if you want to receive some- thing from the Lord you are to ask in faith, nothing wavering. When you pray just so that it would be said that you prayed, you are operating in religion. If you don’t pray in faith, you might as well not pray. The only time to pray is when you are in faith. If you are in faith and you remain in faith, then your prayer is useful. Many pastors have allowed their members to pressurize them and turn them into “prayer contractors” – churning out self-gratifying, powerless, religious prayers in the midst of dense unbelief. When you pray, pray in faith or don’t pray. Some people in the face of an apparently hopeless situation pray for others to see. They are creating an alibi to prove that they prayed and yet the situation did not change. Then God gets blamed for the problem. That is not faith. That is terrible unbelief.

When you identify a need you want God to meet, you need to rush off and pray, right? Wrong! God does not meet you at the “point of your need,” as is often erroneously said in Christian lingo, He meets you at the “point of your faith.” So the first thing to do is to check your faith status concerning what you want to receive from God. Open the Word of God and find out if you know that God is even able to give you that thing. When you can identify that God is able to give you that thing, the next thing to do is to find out if God is willing to give the thing to you. When you can identify that God is willing to give it to you, find out if you are operating on God’s principles concerning that thing. The time to ask for anything is when you are in faith. If you ask when you are in doubt or when you are wavering you won’t get anything. God is not moved by emotions and desperation. You can only contact what He has already provided for you by your faith.
