APPEAL TO THE MERCY OF GOD

22 And behold, a woman of Canaan came from that region and cried out to Him, saying, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David! My daughter is severely demon-possessed.”

Matthew 15:22

When you go through the four Gospels, you will find out that oftentimes when people wanted to appeal to the mercy of God, they called Jesus the “Son of David.” (Matthew 15:22; Luke 18:38- 39). Why was this so? David was a man who experienced the great mercy of God. He did some wrong things in his life, especially his adultery with Bathsheba and the subsequent murder of Uriah, her husband (2 Samuel 11). Once Nathan the prophet exposed the sin of David to him, David confessed it and he quickly prayed, “Have mercy upon me, O God, according to Your loving-kindness; according to the multitude of Your tender mercies, blot out my transgressions” (Psalm 51:1). He received the great mercy of God. So much was the restoring power of God’s mercy that Jesus came from the lineage of David. David was one of His natural ancestors. When you feel like you have really messed things up, don’t depend on your feelings, just appeal to the mercy of God.

Now, the Scripture above is clear about the fact that the woman came out of Canaan. Therefore she was a Gentile with no right to consult God as Healer. The woman knew this. So, when she came to Jesus, the first thing she said was, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David.” The woman appealed to the mercy of God because by the Law she didn’t qualify to receive healing from God. Mercy is when God withholds from you what you deserve and offers you His grace, which you didn’t deserve.

Many times the sovereign mercy of God is manifested in the gifts of the Spirit reaching out to people who are not always in faith. I remember the testimony of a sister who had a respiratory tract infection since October 1997. She had been diagnosed with this after one month in hospital. After ingesting a whole lot of drugs, she could no longer do a lot of things. She couldn’t sieve any dry food the traditional way by blowing away the dirt from the tray. She couldn’t sweep the floor with a short broom or medium length broom. She couldn’t stand up from a sitting or laying position in a hurry, and other things too numerous to mention. Doing any of the above activities led to fainting spells. After about eleven years of being overwhelmed by this, the mercy of God visited her in one of our Healing School meetings. I gave a word of knowledge about this condition. She received it and she was healed. All symptoms gone – just like that! Today she is married and glad to be able to cook for her husband.Such is the mercy of God.

Confession:
I can always appeal to the mercy of God and receive my healing.
