15 And David said with longing, “Oh, that someone would give me a drink of the water from the well of Bethlehem, which is by the gate!”
16 So the three mighty men broke through the camp of the Philistines, drew water from the well of Bethlehem that was by the gate, and took it and brought it to David. Nevertheless he would not drink it, but poured it out to the LORD.
17 And he said, “Far be it from me, O LORD, that I should do this! Is this not the blood of the men who went in jeopardy of their lives?” Therefore he would not drink it. These things were done by the three mighty men.

2 Samuel 23:15-17

24 Then the king said to Araunah, “No, but I will surely buy it from you for a price; nor will I offer burnt offerings to the LORD my God with that which costs me nothing.” So David bought the threshing floor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver.

2 Samuel 24:24

David was a man who understood sacrificial giving. It was his lifestyle to give up things that would give him pleasure in order to please God and honour Him. When his mighty men responded to his desire for water and risked their lives to get the water, David turned around and poured it out to the Lord in sacrifice. He couldn’t grant himself the pleasure of drinking it, after the men had risked their lives to get it. Such selflessness! Such sacrifice! We see it again in his refusal to give an offering to God that “cost him nothing.”

The life of any God-given project has to be sustained by continuous sacrifice. David made up his mind to build the temple, but the Lord told him it was his son, Solomon, who was going to build the temple. David could have gone about his own business; but he knew that the building of the temple was a very big project. Therefore, before the project started, David began to build the backbone of that project. By the time Solomon started to build the temple, David had made majority of the provision (1 Chronicles 29:1-2, 19). By your sacrificial giving, you can make provision for the visions and dreams of the next generation.
