NO OTHER GODS BEFORE ME

2 “I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.
3 You shall have no other gods before Me.”

Exodus 20:2-3

Do you have any other gods other than Almighty God? “Certainly not!” I can hear you promptly reply. I hope this is really true. When you idolize some- thing or someone, that thing or that person has become your god. Idolize means to worship, to put on a pedestal, to stand in awe of, and exalt. When you idolize something or someone, you surrender all else to that thing or person. It is an abuse of worship to idolize anything or anyone but Jehovah, the Almighty God. It is clear that He alone is to be worshipped and adored.

Some Christians idolize clothes. Fashion, especially designer fashion, is their god. They must wear clothes and shoes that have a designer label. Every month, or every 3 months, they must put money aside for that jewellery or those sunglasses or even that expensive weave-on. That is what they think of first. Some of these things are being bought on credit and so every month they have to make payments towards items they are already using. God is not against your looking good and fashionable, but seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all other things shall be added unto you.

For some people, it is their children that they idolize. God wants you to take care of your children, no doubt. If the best university is in the sky and you can take them there, by all means do so. However seek the same God who says, “You shall have no other gods before Me.”

It might sound weird to hear that some people idolize their marriages. It amazes me to see young ladies serve God with fervency and vigour until they get married. Once they are married, that marriage that was a blessing from God, becomes a source of a thousand and one reasons not to keep God on the pedestal that He deserves. What a tragedy!

When you worship God, you make Him your sole focus. Nothing else takes His place. He becomes the Alpha and Omega – the beginning and the end in the true sense of those words.

Confession:
Father, You are my God. I will put nothing and no one before You and the place that belongs to You
