A STRONG TOWER

1 The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?
Psalm 27:1

Let’s see how David overcame fear’s element of surprise and learn from him. David called the Lord the strength of his life. That word “strength” means a fortified place, defence, rock, refuge and stronghold.

If you go to the posh area of the town where you live in, you may find some really big houses. Some have double walls, a fence, electrified fence with barbed wires and big dogs. Some may even have a lion caged at the back. One house in the city where we live was rumoured to have lions. No one was brave enough to go in and confirm the rumour. That was a fortress indeed.

Why do people have all these things? It’s for security. These days, people invest so much in security. Once they hear that there is yet another security device out on the market, they still add it to what they already have. The reason is because they don’t really believe that the security paraphernalia they have is perfect. The latest gadget gives a greater sense of security than the last one. The truth is that all these security devices cannot absolutely save the occupants from an attack by armed robbers.

The reason for living in a secure fortress is to prevent a sudden alarm as a result of a surprise attack. David knew the Lord as the strength of his life, he boldly asked, “Of whom shall I be afraid?” The word “afraid” means a sudden alarm, or to be startled. David knew that because the Lord was his fortified place, no one could suddenly attack him, neither could anyone surprise him. Living in a fortress paralyzes the joker of a surprise attack. Proverbs 18:10 says that the Name of the Lord is a strong tower, the righteous run to it and are safe. Does it say the Name of the Lord is a small bungalow? No, the Name of the Lord is a strong tower. What is the advantage of a tower? The advantage is that you cannot surprise someone in a tower because he will see you before you get there. He will be ready for you before you can get to him.

Confession: Fear cannot spring surprises on me, neither will I be startled because I live in a fortified place. The Lord Himself is my fortified place; He is the strength of my life; He is my strong tower, into Him I have run, and I am safe. Hallelujah!
